About the Site

This page is meant to provide in-depth context to ccwsw.org. In the .pdf link below you will find my paper, "Hyperlinked Scholarship: Exploring the New Existence of www.ccwsw.org, the Community College Women's Studies Web". "Hyperlinked Scholarship" aims to do two things.

The first is to discuss the site and the concrete processes that went into it. This portion looks at my methods for researching, the outcomes, and the difficulties and surprises I encountered in my work over the last two years. It looks at the politics that ground the making of the Web site, and how I have drawn from a framework of feminist activist-oriented scholarship to make this project publicly-accessible while also submitting it for an advanced academic degree.

The second aim of the paper, in a sense, moves beyond the obvious use of the Web site. It intervenes into Women's Studies and into discourses of general education to argue that feminist educational teaching and learning at community colleges poses an important challenge to the assimilationist arc of general education in the United States. The location of Women's Studies as an increasingly legitimized field of study within the academy makes it ideal as a site of progressive struggle, giving it a valuable analytical standpoint at the same time it is rendered complex or entangled by its own position in the educational structure. Further, I argue that the corporate university's reconfiguration of democratic education as consumer education is effectively challenged by community colleges, because of their open-door policies, accessibility to minority, working-class, and non-traditional student populations, links with the local community, and their range of flexible programs and classes.
